Radiculopathy is a condition where nerves are injured and the result is often pain, weakness, and/or numbness. Many times, Radiculopathy results in what is referred to as radiating or radicular pain.
This occurs when the nerve root along the spine is compromised by inflammation, compression, pinching, or other injury. The pain radiates to different parts of the body depending on which nerve is affected.
Some types of radiculopathy include the following:
- Cervical Radiculopathy – Pain travels through the arm in the area of the affected nerve. Numbness, tingling, and/or a pins and needles effect may also be experienced.
- Lumbar Radiculopathy – Pain radiates down the leg. Weakness, numbness, tingling, and/or pins and needles may also occur in the leg and foot.
- Thoracic Radiculopathy – Pain radiates in chest wall and upper abdomen. Weakness, numbness, tingling, and/or pins and needles are also possible.
This type of radiculopathy is thought to be less common than Cervical or Lumbar Radiculopathy.
