When is an Intramedullary Rod inserted?
Intramedullary rods are inserted when the doctor wants to give extra support to the bones. This is usually done when there is a fracture or when the bones are weak. The rod is inserted into the marrow of the bone, which is the soft tissue that lies in the centre of the bone. This helps to stabilise the bone and help it heal properly.
This typically occurs after a traumatic event, such as a car accident, truck accident, mass transit accident, bus accident, train accident, SEPTA accident, or other automobile accident, or slip and fall.
What is an Intramedullary Rod?
An intramedullary rod is a metal rod that is inserted into the marrow of a bone to help stabilise it. It is made of titanium or stainless steel and is inserted into the bone through a small incision in the skin. The rod is then held in place with screws or metal plates.
The intramedullary rod is also known as an IM rod, intramedullary nail, or interlocking nail. It is a type of fixation device that is used to treat fractures of the long bones in the body, such as the femur (thigh bone) or tibia (shin bone).
For example, for the treatment of femoral shaft fractures, an intramedullary femur rod can be inserted to support and heal the bone. For treating tibia bones, an intramedullary rod tibia can be inserted to repair the fractured bone.
What happens after the Intramedullary Rod is inserted?
Unfortunately, the placement is never entirely pain-free. Patients who have had surgery of this type frequently suffer from discomfort where the rod was inserted. It is not uncommon for the patient to feel as if there is something “pushing” on their bone or that their bone is “heavy.” The discomfort is usually managed with pain medication.
Typically, cases that require an intramedullary rod or nail are due to severe fractures. If you have experienced a fracture caused by the negligence of another person, then you may need to seek legal advice. You could be entitled to seek compensation for your injuries, medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
